Ghost in the Shell: ARISE

Ghost in the Shell: ARISE

Nowadays it takes something of pretty significant importance for me to post on Today, one of those pretty significant things has happened…

Production I.G surprised fans in January with the announcement of a new Ghost in the Shell project. We were to wait by our persocom’s for further news… Then on Tuesday I saw this via the GITS Channel on YouTube. There isn’t much in the trailer that needs translating but the basics are that this is a prequel. It’s a four part mini-series. The first instalment is to be released on June 22 in Japanese cinemas with a Blu-ray and DVD version following closely behind on July 26. Subsequent episodes will be released after that but no dates (at this point) have been leaked.

The storyline is unavoidably the origin story of the lead protagonist of the series, Motoko Kusanagi. Geek food for this comes in the form of the voice actor that spoke the last line in the original Ghost in the Shell film, where Kusanagi is placed into the cyborg body of a young girl, will be handling the voice tasks for this series.

More news will undoubtedly follow and I will be following with extreme prejudice. Stay tuned…

Evangelion 4 Gets Title

Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban 𝄇 (シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版𝄇)The fourth (and final) instalment of the Evangelion Movie franchise seems to have it’s title. Saturday saw the theatrical release of Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (Evangelion Shin Gekijō-ban Q) in Japan and a leaflet that was handed out with the ticket suggested that the last film in the Gainax reboot/redo/rehash of the series would be named: Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban 𝄇 (シン・エヴァンゲリオン劇場版𝄇). The translation of which won’t make any sense to English speaking viewers as they did not directly translate the film titles in the first place. The first three films sub-texts are taken from the three classical music movements (Jo-Ha-Kyū or Introduction-Exposition-Climax) of traditional Japanese music such as gagaku and Noh. This fourth title has a symbol at the end denoting the repetition after reaching the end of a measure. I have no clue what any of this means and as stated above. it doesn’t really matter as the English film titles have nothing to do with their original counterparts. Still, it’s worth knowing I suppose…

Autumn Anime Watchlist

Autumn is upon us and here at the LoLyfe Towers it means an abject abundance of anime awesomeness. The darkness that hangs over the rooftops here for pretty much the whole of the day, lasts until springtime but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all doom and gloom — no — This autumn promises some great anime titles, some unusual, some familiar reworks and some that, well, are better left well alone – but either way, there’s a lot on the way. Below are my own personal highlights which probably won’t hold to the core of anime fans out there but personal taste is what it is…

I’ll come back to this post in November to give my first impressions but until then, sit back and enjoy your autumn delights…

Starship Troopers: Invasion

CGI Starship Troopers: Invasion – Japanese Trailer

Starship Troopers: Invasion

From Director Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed, Appleseed EX Machina), comes the surprisingly cool looking Starship Troopers: Invasion — A CG epic based on Robert Heinlein‘s book and continuing ten years on from Paul Verhoeven’s ’97 effort (and thankfully, ignoring all subsequent sequels).

Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. Movie Gets 3D Makeover

Solid State SocietySolid State Society, the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex movie is getting the 3D treatment and will be hitting Japanese cinemas in March 2011. The announcement was made on Monday that the Production I.G. classic will be getting a new opening sequence and the process is being overseen by Director Kenji Kamiyama, the man whose credits include such amazing anime releases such as Blood: The Last Vampire, the Eden of the East TV and subsequent movie releases, Jin-Roh – The Wolf Brigade, Moribito – Guardian of the Spirit and Roujin Z to name but a few.

The GitS: S.A.C. SSS OVA that was released back in 2006 takes up the story of the Section 9 crew 2 years after Major Motoko Kusanagi has left. Togusa is now at the helm of the anti-terrorism unit and on the trail of the Puppeteer (or Puppet Master in the English release), a hacker that is believed to be behind a series of suicides.
The investigation leads the team towards high ranking officials in the Government and this is when the Major suddenly reappears. Is she connected to the events?

Real time updates will be available via Twitter from the projects Director and Producer, Tomohiko Ishii.

Rebuild of Evangelion Entry Plug Chopsticks

Eva Unit 00 + Rei Ayanami
Eva Unit 00 + Rei Ayanami
CDJapan has these great little items on offer. Much in the vein of the Star Wars Lightsaber Chopsticks I mentioned a while back, these ones are based on the massive anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Coming in their suited EVA colours, the chopsticks have the pilots entombed in the uppermost part of the chopstick and whilst they look pretty cool, I’m not sure how ‘usable’ they are… Either way, they are a must have for any serious collector of Evangelion memorabilia…

Video: Turning Japanese – Kirsten Dunst ‘Akihabara Majokko Princess’

Remember that post back in August last year where I was going on about Kirsten Dunst displaying her CosPlay talents in Akihabara? Well the video finally has been finally upped on YouTube and here it is… have to say, I’m not the biggest Kirstin Dunst fan – but this has done a greatmany things to change my mind… Follow Kirsten as she wanders around Akihabara singing the Vapors classic – ‘Turning Japanese‘.

The video, produced by McG and Takashi Murakami (who also directed the piece) was put together for the Pop Life exhibit at the Tate Modern in London that finished it’s run this past week. The Production company has also got the video available and it can be found over at Company 3’s website. However, the site is image heavy and even if you’ve got a super-duper broadband connection it’s a real hog… Better off clicking on the vid above if you ask me!!

[Trailer] SHOCHIKU to release BECK Live Action

One of the best (IMHO) anime’s of recent years has been BECK: The Mongolian Chop Squad. Based on the manga ‘BECK‘ by Harold Sakuishi published by Kodansha in Monthly Shōnen Magazine from February 2000 until it went on hiatus from May 2008.
The story is based around a high school boy that learns to play guitar and ultimately joins a rock band, along the way befriending Ryosuke, an enigmatic musician that has a dog called BECK.

SHOCHIKU Co., Ltd. has announced that 2010 will see a live action version directed by the one and only TSUTSUMI Yukihiko (20th Century Boys series) and will star Hiro MIZUSHIMA as Ryusuke, Takeru SATO as Koyuki and Shiori KUTSUNA.
Information about the project including the above trailer can be found on the SHOCHIKU English web site.

New Anime Recommendations

I was chatting with Janos the other night about some decent anime that has popped up just recently. I don’t usually go big with the anime side of things on the site as there is a staggering wealth of sites dedicated to it out there already, but today I just had to put in a shout for Durarara!! (or Dullalala!! or even 无头骑士异闻录 if you’re that way inclined…).
This has already been picked up by CR and I’m in no doubt that it will become a classic.

from AniDB:
Based on a light novel series written by Narita Ryougo and illustrations by Yasuda Suzuhito.

The author Narita and illustrator Yasuda Suzuhito’s “distorted love story” is set in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, and revolves around an ensemble cast including street thugs, high school students, a female radio host, an underworld doctor, a young information vendor, and a headless Irish fairy.

Fantastic characters and setting makes this not only an unusual anime, but a real shot in the arm from all the loli/fanservice series we’re seeing of late.

I also want to big-up Bakemonogatari. I’m a bit late on this one as it was running through last summer on Japanese TV.

also from AniDB:
Bakemonogatari centres on Araragi Koyomi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Senjougahara Hitagi, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi’s arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. After being threatened by her, Koyomi offers her help, and introduces her to Oshino Meme, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

One of the things that attracted me to this particular anime was the style. It has hints of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei in there (it’s from SHAFT so I suppose it would be hinted at) but it also has a quality and uniqueness that is really refreshing.

Both these series are available at your usual anime sources…

[Trailer] King of Thorn

Yuji Iwahara’s manga, King of Thorn is being made into a full length movie. The trailer (below) depicts the storyline as thus: 160 humans have been infected with the lethal Thorn virus and are put on ice until a cure can be found. The story takes place after a few people wake up from their cryogenic chambers seemingly only to be fed upon by a group of monsters.
