After the latest update to the site, I got a few messages from people who read the blog on-the-go and were having problems with access and readability. So, I had a look around the WP Plugins Directory to see if there was anything that would help. I came across the WordPress Mobile Pack that cured the problem instantly! No more waiting for flash videos that don’t work properly, no more waiting for large image files to load that take up precious bandwidth allowance – now it’s just a simple interactive interface that is easy to read on your mobile… This clever little package has a function that knows if you’re reading the blog on a mobile device, so there’s no need to manually switch and there’s no interruption of service on the site’s main page. I hope it helps all 3 of you!!!
Props to James Pearce & friends for the plugin pack.
At last, my web server host has finally sorted out a great many issues with my access to the server and has also rectified some issues with security too – which is nice… So the site can finally be cut over to the new style that’s been undergo rigorous testing (!) for the last couple of months. This is somewhat of a transition period so expect a few glitches here and there but hopefully the kinks should be ironed out over the next week or so.
As for the looks, well, the banner isn’t finalised and the ad for LoSwag is lame, I know, but until I can spend some time putting something decent together, this will have to do. I’ve also got to get a new default image sorted for posts without thumbnails. I’m pretty sure I’ll get done for copyright if I’m not careful! Which reminds me, ignore the image on the right here, I just slapped it in there to see if the thumbnail automation was working… which it is… All the tags and links to the social sites will be updated as time goes on, not only do I have to dig out all the memberships but I have to figure out whether I want them on there or not…
The theme is fantastic, right? I was looking all over for a ‘magazine’ style template but could only find premium themes that had starting prices of about $60. I wasn’t about to shell out money on a theme without knowing it’s shelf life. WP upgrades so often, I’d hate to pay good money and find it not be compatible.
Anyway, the theme is called WPBoxedTech and is by izwan00 over at Technology Tricks.
As for comments, well, they’re kind of disabled. I thought I’d shut them off completely but I’m still getting a few spam comments every day. For the time being, if you want to comment you need to become a subscriber. Once you’re membership is confirmed you are free to post what you like… so you can either subscribe or send me an email and we’ll take it from there…
Now that the theme is a little less cluttered it seems to be a lot more ad heavy. I assure you it’s not, it’s exactly the same but I think a bit of clipping is in order so expect a few less sponsors visible in the near future… or maybe just the size of the ads might change, I dunno… I’ll think about it … In the meantime, welcome to the new and improved LoLyfe.com, powering your need for all things Asian Cinema and Geek and Otaku related gumpf… cool ne?
I’ve had to disable comments from people that don’t register. Overnight I received over 2,000 spam comments, mostly from Russia and Turkey, and I just don’t have the energy to sift through them to see if any are legit – which I doubt, can’t remember the last time I had a legit comment on this site…
I’ve also disengaged Dave’s Spam Karma 2 as well, I really liked this little plugin but Akismet that comes pre-packed with WP seems to be doing the job on my other sites so I’ve succumbed…
I’ve been suffering from major blog issues the last few weeks, so much so that my intended participation in the J-Cinema Blogathon had to be called off.
Anyway, if you use 1&1 as a host and have had issues with your Dashboard or uploading images resulting in the following error:
Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occurred!
Please try again later!
…then the following may be useful to you.
In your root folder you should have an .htaccess file. If not, create one – no extension necessary, just name it ‘.htaccess’.
Put the following entries:
Options All -Indexes
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php
# BEGIN WordPress
# END WordPress
…and Bob’s your Uncle, Fanny’s your Aunt. Problem solved. Well it was for me anyway. If you come across the error and would like to leave a comment, please do so, I would like to compile some sort of report to forward onto 1&1.
Sorry for not posting recently, I’m having major issues with either my host or the new installation of WordPress. For the time being I’ve had to un’plug’ everything and revert to a basic theme. Things will be back to normal as soon as possible…
As you can see, things look as though they are back to normal…
I’m attempting to change the site a little over the next few days by trying to lose a lot of the unused gumpf in the widget area and streamline the ads a little better, please bear with me whilst I mess this all up…
Ok, it’s not really an excuse for not writing anything for a month (or more!) but the site was a little bit behind the times (on the back end side of things). The latest WordPress release was touted to have had a few issues with certain plugins that I use and I wanted to make sure that it would all work ok. I could have done this ages ago, but with my carbon footprint stomping all over the North Sea region, I’ve had little or no time to actually sit down and spend any quality time with the site. So today I decided that I would, at last, just go for it. All backups complete and the WP DB has been upgraded. I’ve had a little fiddle and it all seems to be tickety-boo! So, onwards and upwards my friends … it’s gonna non-stop fun and mayhem from here on out!!!
For the time being, at least… The site is now as fixed as I can get it. For those keeping up-to-date with the rants I’ve been putting under the Hacked Off post will know that things are pretty much back to normal, bar the search function which seems to be limited to an issue with Firefox. However, as I’ve been concentrating on the obvious stuff (and a few things that went pear-shaped on the admin side) I’m not absolutely sure that the rest of the site is running as it should. So if you come across any weirdness, please let me know, ta.
On that note, an issue that’s been raised by a few people that use IE where on navigating to the site, it loads then the page goes blank. After a little scouting about in various forums, I found that this may be something to do with the version of Java Runtime Environment (jre) you’re running. Best to get an update directly from Sun and then try it again. If this doesn’t work, again, please let me know.
I am now going to buy some super glue and attempt to put back all the hair I’ve torn out over the last couple of days…
Those who noticed would have seen that the site was unavailable most of yesterday. This was down to some bright spark who hacked the WP code from the source I downloaded it from. I’m not going into who and how and why as it’s all back up now. What I will say is that if you run WordPress you’re probably better off doing a manual install when the updates are released.
The site will be entering into maintenance mode again over the next couple of days whilst I filter out all the crap that was in the latest upgrade and reinstall it from scratch. It seems to be running okay at the moment but if you come across anything suspicious, any weird ads or anything untoward – drop me a line.
So my week of recovery (read: being lazy, stinky and pyjama encased) is almost up. But on looking out of the window I might extend it a few more days. It’s been snowing on and off since Wednesday night now, not the kind of heavy snow that engulfs the place; more a ‘wet’ snow that looks totally cold and nasty and not the kind of weather you really want to go out in, even if it’s just nipping to the shops. Although I am at a stage where some groceries are required. Plus if I go out I could risk opening the windows to air the apartment out. Being a shut-in does wonders for room aroma..!
Major setbacks in the UK mean that my trip to Japan is on the back burner, I’ll be in touch with those who were planning to meet up with me shortly to explain what’s going on.
More updates to the site will be implemented over the weekend, so any bugs should be ironed out by Monday.
I’m currently working on a slight tweak to the site, I’m not taking it off-line whilst I do this so you’ll probably notice a few weird things going on. Some formatting issues have already come to light and the widgets seem to be having a few problems fitting into my columns… so please bear with me whilst I fiddle with it for a bit…
The main reason to this update is that I’ve noticed that those of you with LCD monitors have absolutely no idea how to tune them in properly. This means the site looks pretty pants and, ergo, makes me look second rate..! How dare you!!
So anyway, I’ve gone with a pretty smooth looking K2 Style called Fork, originally penned by Dave Kellam over at eightface.com and subsequently brought up-to-date by a person with a lot more patience than me at gigi’s sandbox. It seems to look pretty good on all sorts of monitors .. although I need to do a double check. If you feel that it still needs to be ‘prettied up’ please let me know…
As with the other styles, I’ll get around to altering it to a more LoLyfe-type of thing, but I kinda like the look of it as is, so I’m leaving it alone for the next few weeks.
A few notes from various peeps have discovered an issue when clicking on the YesAsia link/banner in the sidebar (near the bottom of the page at the moment). If you encounter any issues, please let me know by commenting here… cheers.
edit: Ticket opened with Webgains – it’s probably a YesAsia issue, but all code is delivered via Webgains, they’ll sort it no doubt…
I’ve finally got the Smart Car back on the road!
In the end it turned out to be the battery that was the problem, I’m told that a battery can have a life of between 2 and 10 years. So I guess 7 isn’t so bad. Anyway, the very friendly people at Biltema (Sweden’s answer to Halfords I suppose) found a Varta replacement for my Bulldog and the car is now running sweetly. Which is so bloody great as the last week or so of walking everywhere was really getting to me.
Vista is re-installed on Lucifer and seems to be ‘OK’ at the moment, although a possible issue with my RAM has surfaced. Luckily the motherboard will take another 2 gig, so I’ll probably get around to that soon.
The site has had a few tweaks over the last couple of days, some visible – some not so. You’ll see an AddThis button at the bottom of each post – this will let you bookmark the post entry to your favourite feed/bookmark/blog site. This may not be permanent, I’ll watch the stats and see how it goes.
Well, I took the plunge. At about 3 a.m. this morning, after what I can only describe as being visited by a ‘heavy’ ghost, I got out of bed and, with all the lights on, started the arduous process of backing up Lucifer.
By 8 a.m. I’m convinced that all the necessary data is secure and I place the Vista disk in the drive and format the HD. At nearly 8 p.m. I’m still neck deep in updates and install procedures that are not just hard work, but a lesson in tedium.
I will endeavour to finish the task tomorrow when my eyes have uncrossed themselves and I can feel my fingertips. Until then, email isn’t quite right so texts and messages via the site please …
What with one thing or another, and I’m sure you’ve noticed (!), I haven’t been updating the blog recently. I won’t go into the whole story but part of it involves a knackered Smart Car. Anyway, I should be having some work done on it over the next week or so by Benz, which I’m not very happy about but I haven’t really got much choice, so that’s one problem that should be solved… soon… I hope…
So anyway, let’s catch up!
I’ve been busy with re-writes… yes! Re-writes!
“You mean you’ve actually been working Lo?”
Yes, yes I have and don’t be so effing facetious.
After hitting what I can only describe as a bloody great big wall (a wall that stopped me writing, you get that right?), I found that the narrative of the whole book was wrong. So, there you go, years of work has been used as a building block for something much better (!) and should read a lot better. The first chapter is available to those who want a look or fancy doing some proof reading, just drop me a line.
Vista is still being a bastard. I think that a complete reinstall is on the cards …
The weather here is shit.
Enough catching up? No? Well bloody call me then you lazy sod…
… yes, week.
A virus totally wiped me out until Sunday, plus I’ve been hassled non stop by creditors due to a ‘misunderstanding’ with my handler at the social. To top it off I had a migraine that is still being felt today.
A list of problems have been keeping me occupied (not including contacting my landlords, electricity suppliers, mobile phone operator and a debt collection agency!!) and I’ve found out that it all stemmed from an innocent update of an anti virus tool.
Anyone who has upgraded from AVG 7.5 to 8.0 will know how utterly pants it is. I checked a few sites and the one that I usually go by (MajorGeeks.com) suggested PCTools Antivirus. What it failed to say was that it was totally incompatible with Outlook 2007. So for a week I’ve been trying to get Outlook to work whilst not realising that a recommended security tool was the bloody thing stopping it working in the first place. So, if I’ve recommended AVG 8.0 or PCTools Antivirus to you recently – ignore me … in fact I’m not going to tell you what I’m running now as I’m sure it’ll all go pear shaped in the near future too.
Long story short… if you’ve sent me an email the three reasons I haven’t got back to you are:
I was sick.
My email didn’t work anyway.
I will attempt to do some more updating this week but I ain’t promisin’ nuffink. Knickers on, and all that…
Right, I’ve spent most of the night and pretty much all of today in the office sweating my nads off. It’s bloody boiling here, can’t believe how warm it actually is! I should be outside in the glorious sunshine changing my skin tone from a pasty translucent effect to something along the lines of a colour. However, with the nagging about the blog not being up-to-date, I have sacrificed the weather and sat diligently in my own body liquids to bring you the new and improved LoLyfe.com – and I know you won’t notice any difference what-so-ever. So it was probably a complete waste of time… There are a couple of plug-ins left to go, I just have to figure the code out and then there’s the ads. Sorry about that but I’ve got to generate some income somehow.
This time tomorrow it should be done and I’ll get down to writing a blog of sorts …
Okay, so I’ve finally got around to sorting the problems with the site. It’s not totally right yet, so expect some issues if navigating about the place. However, if you’re just a post reader, then you shouldn’t experience any problems.
I will endeavour to write a few posts over the next couple of days for all those people that have been complaining about the lack of postage. I really don’t see what the problem is, it’s not as if I post anything interesting…
Before I sign off I just have to get you to see this Smart car kick a Ferrari’s arse …
Props to Tee for the link and to Russ for finding it in the first place… Mwah!
