Sharp Adding TV with Blu-ray recorder – built in

The Sharp Corporation have announced that it will be adding eight new models of its DX range of LED AQUOS TV’s and they will have Blu-ray disc recorders built in.
These are to be released primarily to the Japanese market at first, but fingers crossed it won’t be long before they reach our high streets. And I suppose you’d better cross your toes that the price is going to be within reach!

Anime2 – Mobile Friendly!

After the latest update to the site, I got a few messages from people who read the blog on-the-go and were having problems with access and readability. So, I had a look around the WP Plugins Directory to see if there was anything that would help. I came across the WordPress Mobile Pack that cured the problem instantly! No more waiting for flash videos that don’t work properly, no more waiting for large image files to load that take up precious bandwidth allowance – now it’s just a simple interactive interface that is easy to read on your mobile… This clever little package has a function that knows if you’re reading the blog on a mobile device, so there’s no need to manually switch and there’s no interruption of service on the site’s main page. I hope it helps all 3 of you!!!
Props to James Pearce & friends for the plugin pack.

Video: Cop Out Trailer

Cop Out
Cop Out
Over the years this blog has changed course a few times, but it will always remain true to it’s roots when it comes to stuff like this…

This trailer has been up on YouTube for a bit now, but I had to include it somewhere on the blog, then I remembered that this little site had it’s humble beginnings worshipping the man, the God, the Geek that is Kevin Smith.

Cop Out sees a major shift in the movies that we’re used to seeing from Kevin Smith, a buddy cop flick is definitely not in line with previous efforts in the least. However, I for one am waiting with baited breath and can’t wait for it to arrive here. With the change in direction I’m sure it will get it’s fair share of haters, but as I haven’t watched a film of his that I didn’t like – I won’t be one of them. Plus I have this uncanny ability to like this dude’s stuff no matter what… And yes, I loved Jersey Girl, hand-on-heart.

The film, originally titled A Couple of Dicks, has the tagline: Rock Out With Your Glock Out – Typical Moves,

is a cop-comedy about a veteran NYPD cop whose rare baseball card is stolen. Since it’s his only hope to pay for his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he recruits his partner to track down the thief, a memorabilia-obsessed gangster. [from IMDB]

If you’re interested in all things Silent Bob then it’s not hard to find him on the internet. He is a major nerd when it comes to blogging, tweeting and various other forms of interwub interaction. The best place to start is probably his personal online diary – My Boring Ass Life – which hasn’t been all that boring in the last month as you’ll see if you go and read it…

New Look…

At last, my web server host has finally sorted out a great many issues with my access to the server and has also rectified some issues with security too – which is nice… So the site can finally be cut over to the new style that’s been undergo rigorous testing (!) for the last couple of months. This is somewhat of a transition period so expect a few glitches here and there but hopefully the kinks should be ironed out over the next week or so.
As for the looks, well, the banner isn’t finalised and the ad for LoSwag is lame, I know, but until I can spend some time putting something decent together, this will have to do. I’ve also got to get a new default image sorted for posts without thumbnails. I’m pretty sure I’ll get done for copyright if I’m not careful! Which reminds me, ignore the image on the right here, I just slapped it in there to see if the thumbnail automation was working… which it is… All the tags and links to the social sites will be updated as time goes on, not only do I have to dig out all the memberships but I have to figure out whether I want them on there or not…

The theme is fantastic, right? I was looking all over for a ‘magazine’ style template but could only find premium themes that had starting prices of about $60. I wasn’t about to shell out money on a theme without knowing it’s shelf life. WP upgrades so often, I’d hate to pay good money and find it not be compatible.
Anyway, the theme is called WPBoxedTech and is by izwan00 over at Technology Tricks.

As for comments, well, they’re kind of disabled. I thought I’d shut them off completely but I’m still getting a few spam comments every day. For the time being, if you want to comment you need to become a subscriber. Once you’re membership is confirmed you are free to post what you like… so you can either subscribe or send me an email and we’ll take it from there…

Now that the theme is a little less cluttered it seems to be a lot more ad heavy. I assure you it’s not, it’s exactly the same but I think a bit of clipping is in order so expect a few less sponsors visible in the near future… or maybe just the size of the ads might change, I dunno… I’ll think about it … In the meantime, welcome to the new and improved, powering your need for all things Asian Cinema and Geek and Otaku related gumpf… cool ne?

Too Much Spam

I’ve had to disable comments from people that don’t register. Overnight I received over 2,000 spam comments, mostly from Russia and Turkey, and I just don’t have the energy to sift through them to see if any are legit – which I doubt, can’t remember the last time I had a legit comment on this site…
I’ve also disengaged Dave’s Spam Karma 2 as well, I really liked this little plugin but Akismet that comes pre-packed with WP seems to be doing the job on my other sites so I’ve succumbed…

Coming Soon

LoLyfe will be back soon, after a long stint of lethargy and other issues involving hacking attacks, the site will be updated later this week, so keep ‘em peeled.

New site design to be implemented before month end. Hopefully I can weed out the problems I’m having with some code and get the new and improved look running. Plus I’ve got to check whether the template I’ve gone with is going to be compatible with WP 2.8.5

Back catalogue of reviews. I’ve watched a truck load of flicks over the past month or so, so expect a few decent recommendations…

Didn’t See This Coming: Disney Buys Marvel

Maybe it’s because I’m still suffering with Far East Jaunt withdrawal, but my geek radar seems to be a bit out of whack. Whilst perusing the British broadsheets online today, I came across this little article in the finance section that not only shocked me, but made me hit every comic book web site I could find to disprove it! But, alas, it was true. Disney has indeed bought out Marvel for $4 Billion …

Disney’s chief executive, Bob Iger, said Marvel had a “treasure trove” of intellectual property that “transcends gender, age, culture and geographical barriers”.

“There are so many opportunities to mine both characters that are known and characters that are not widely known,” Iger said.

Marvel’s chairman, Mort Handel, described Disney as a “perfect home” for his company’s library of characters. “Both companies have their roots in great storytelling and innovative artistry,” he said.

Update Sep 2nd ’09: The Guardian Online has another article: Why Disney’s Marvel Takeover May Save Superheroes

So, catching up on all things with comic-geeky-goodness and I come across this little article at

Announced at the San Diego Comic Con, Marvel told an astonished crowd that it had gotten the rights to Marvelman. This title has been in limbo for almost an eternity with creators such as Dez Skinn, Alan Moore, Todd McFarlane, to name but a few, all boasting ownership of the franchise. As it turned out, the original creator Mick Anglo who first created the comic back in 1954 had the final say, and that, as they say, is that. Micky Moran is now part of the Marvel family!!

Let’s just pray that they don’t try and weave him into the time-line like they did with The Sentry … hated that…

Error 500 WordPress 1&1 Web Hosting

I’ve been suffering from major blog issues the last few weeks, so much so that my intended participation in the J-Cinema Blogathon had to be called off.
Anyway, if you use 1&1 as a host and have had issues with your Dashboard or uploading images resulting in the following error:

Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occurred!
Please try again later!

…then the following may be useful to you.

In your root folder you should have an .htaccess file. If not, create one – no extension necessary, just name it ‘.htaccess’.

Put the following entries:

Options All -Indexes

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

# BEGIN WordPress

# END WordPress

…and Bob’s your Uncle, Fanny’s your Aunt. Problem solved. Well it was for me anyway. If you come across the error and would like to leave a comment, please do so, I would like to compile some sort of report to forward onto 1&1.

Quitely Does It

Batman and Robin
Batman and Robin
This month saw DC’s first issue of ‘Batman and Robin’ part of the Batman: Reborn story arc. Messrs Morrison and Quitely deliver a powerhouse of an opening issue, introducing non other than Master Dick as the man in The Cowl.
With Batman off to the Batcave in the sky, Dick Grayson takes over the coveted mantle of Batman, taking on Bruce Waynes true son, Damian, as Robin. Their first outing sees them encounter Toad, a henchman working for Pyg. Who is the man behind the Piggy mask?
Awesome opener from the team that brought you All Star Superman and New X-Men. From a personal stand point I haven’t read a good Batman book in ages – this one has got me back on the wagon…

[n.b. Problems with host means that I can't upload photos's correctly at the moment, hope to have it fixed soon.]

Review: Push (2009)

  • 2 squirts of of X-Men
  • A pinch of Heroes
  • Put in Blender and blitz!

Don’t get me wrong, I love both the X-Men franchise and Heroes, and mixing the best bits of them into this effect laden cluster fudge of a picture gives you get a couple of hours of delectable indulgence. It’s utter escapism and bloody enjoyable to-boot.
I’ll be honest and say that I wasn’t expecting too much and maybe that worked in its favour. The line-up of Dakota Fanning (who is awesome), Chris Evans and Djimon Hounsou didn’t fill me with awe but they do their jobs in a way above par manor.
Evans plays Nick Gant, a man with a special gift – he can move things telekinetically. The problem with this is that The Division (a Government Agency) wants him for their own means. Not wanting to become a lab-rat and be tested on with a new drug that is supposed to enhance the power he holds, he goes on the run with the aid of a young 13 year old girl – Cassie (Fanning) in an attempt to overthrow The Division and save her mother and the other ‘special’ people in the process that are locked up in a facility somewhere.
All this action takes place in the gutter sprawl that is Hong Kong. Into the mix comes a plethora of ‘abled’ beings. Sniffers, Screamers, Shadows … the list goes on. But with all these super-powered people on the loose, who’s going to stop them from bringing the walls of Hong Kong down?

Director Paul McGuigan‘s (Lucky Number Slevin, Wicker Park) vision of a bustling cityscape being obliterated by super beings

Awesomely enjoyable jaunt, an absolute must for all Super Hero fans and anyone that enjoys a good slice of movie magic pie!

Marvel to Reboot Daredevil? (At Last!!)

Romita Jr's Typhoid Mary
Romita Jr's Typhoid Mary
The chaps over at Golden Apple Comics blogged yesterday that non other than Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck of BSG), was in the store stocking up on all the back issues of Typhoid Mary related comics they had.
Any DD fans will know that Mary was not only a kick-ass Bad Gal but pretty lethal in the mental stakes too. Something that Sackhoff has produced with ease in her roles in both BSG and the short lived Bionic Woman reboot. And before you go all cock-a-hoop with the known fact that the character appeared in the Elektra flick – yeah, I know – but she was pretty crap (IMHO).
Now all I hope is that for Offen’s sake they ask Affleck to reprise his role, otherwise I’ll never hear the end of it!

Ok, it’s not really an excuse for not writing anything for a month (or more!) but the site was a little bit behind the times (on the back end side of things). The latest WordPress release was touted to have had a few issues with certain plugins that I use and I wanted to make sure that it would all work ok. I could have done this ages ago, but with my carbon footprint stomping all over the North Sea region, I’ve had little or no time to actually sit down and spend any quality time with the site. So today I decided that I would, at last, just go for it. All backups complete and the WP DB has been upgraded. I’ve had a little fiddle and it all seems to be tickety-boo! So, onwards and upwards my friends … it’s gonna non-stop fun and mayhem from here on out!!!

Sam Jackson in 9 Picture Deal for Marvel!

That’s right, 9 picture deal!
So we all know that he’s going to pop up in Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. I should imagine he will have his own Nick Fury pic too, add this to the sequels that are bound to happen and you have a mouth watering collection of Fan Boy fodder.
Oooooh, hope they do Secret Wars …..
