LoLyfe.com – Mobile Friendly!

After the latest update to the site, I got a few messages from people who read the blog on-the-go and were having problems with access and readability. So, I had a look around the WP Plugins Directory to see if there was anything that would help. I came across the WordPress Mobile Pack that cured the problem instantly! No more waiting for flash videos that don’t work properly, no more waiting for large image files to load that take up precious bandwidth allowance – now it’s just a simple interactive interface that is easy to read on your mobile… This clever little package has a function that knows if you’re reading the blog on a mobile device, so there’s no need to manually switch and there’s no interruption of service on the site’s main page. I hope it helps all 3 of you!!!
Props to James Pearce & friends for the plugin pack.

New Look…

At last, my web server host has finally sorted out a great many issues with my access to the server and has also rectified some issues with security too – which is nice… So the site can finally be cut over to the new style that’s been undergo rigorous testing (!) for the last couple of months. This is somewhat of a transition period so expect a few glitches here and there but hopefully the kinks should be ironed out over the next week or so.
As for the looks, well, the banner isn’t finalised and the ad for LoSwag is lame, I know, but until I can spend some time putting something decent together, this will have to do. I’ve also got to get a new default image sorted for posts without thumbnails. I’m pretty sure I’ll get done for copyright if I’m not careful! Which reminds me, ignore the image on the right here, I just slapped it in there to see if the thumbnail automation was working… which it is… All the tags and links to the social sites will be updated as time goes on, not only do I have to dig out all the memberships but I have to figure out whether I want them on there or not…

The theme is fantastic, right? I was looking all over for a ‘magazine’ style template but could only find premium themes that had starting prices of about $60. I wasn’t about to shell out money on a theme without knowing it’s shelf life. WP upgrades so often, I’d hate to pay good money and find it not be compatible.
Anyway, the theme is called WPBoxedTech and is by izwan00 over at Technology Tricks.

As for comments, well, they’re kind of disabled. I thought I’d shut them off completely but I’m still getting a few spam comments every day. For the time being, if you want to comment you need to become a subscriber. Once you’re membership is confirmed you are free to post what you like… so you can either subscribe or send me an email and we’ll take it from there…

Now that the theme is a little less cluttered it seems to be a lot more ad heavy. I assure you it’s not, it’s exactly the same but I think a bit of clipping is in order so expect a few less sponsors visible in the near future… or maybe just the size of the ads might change, I dunno… I’ll think about it … In the meantime, welcome to the new and improved LoLyfe.com, powering your need for all things Asian Cinema and Geek and Otaku related gumpf… cool ne?

Too Much Spam

I’ve had to disable comments from people that don’t register. Overnight I received over 2,000 spam comments, mostly from Russia and Turkey, and I just don’t have the energy to sift through them to see if any are legit – which I doubt, can’t remember the last time I had a legit comment on this site…
I’ve also disengaged Dave’s Spam Karma 2 as well, I really liked this little plugin but Akismet that comes pre-packed with WP seems to be doing the job on my other sites so I’ve succumbed…

Coming Soon

LoLyfe will be back soon, after a long stint of lethargy and other issues involving hacking attacks, the site will be updated later this week, so keep ‘em peeled.

New site design to be implemented before month end. Hopefully I can weed out the problems I’m having with some code and get the new and improved look running. Plus I’ve got to check whether the template I’ve gone with is going to be compatible with WP 2.8.5

Back catalogue of reviews. I’ve watched a truck load of flicks over the past month or so, so expect a few decent recommendations…

Clean Up

I’ve just spent the day clearing up the Categories for the whole site. It’s still not as stream-lined as I would have wished but it’s a lot simpler to navigate now if you use the category drop down menu that’s now available in the sidebar.
These does seem to have done strange things to the Comments widget though, sorry about that…

Feedback welcome…

Missing Links

Recent problems with either my host or my WP configuration (my host insists that the problem was with my WP install, even though the config hasn’t changed for the last 3 years!!) meant that I wasn’t able to upload a few reviews that had pictures attached. But now the problem seems to be resolved and all those posts that I put into my drafts folder ready for publishing when it was possible to do so, well, can now be published.
So sit back and enjoy a bundle of movie reviews and Asian oriented geekyness … O(≧∇≦)O

I hope to get at least 10 pressed today, with the other 25 or so pressed over the next few days … although I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s easier said than done …

Error 500 WordPress 1&1 Web Hosting

I’ve been suffering from major blog issues the last few weeks, so much so that my intended participation in the J-Cinema Blogathon had to be called off.
Anyway, if you use 1&1 as a host and have had issues with your Dashboard or uploading images resulting in the following error:

Error 500 – Internal server error
An internal server error has occurred!
Please try again later!

…then the following may be useful to you.

In your root folder you should have an .htaccess file. If not, create one – no extension necessary, just name it ‘.htaccess’.

Put the following entries:

Options All -Indexes

AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php

# BEGIN WordPress

# END WordPress

…and Bob’s your Uncle, Fanny’s your Aunt. Problem solved. Well it was for me anyway. If you come across the error and would like to leave a comment, please do so, I would like to compile some sort of report to forward onto 1&1.

Resemblance of Normality

For the time being, at least… The site is now as fixed as I can get it. For those keeping up-to-date with the rants I’ve been putting under the Hacked Off post will know that things are pretty much back to normal, bar the search function which seems to be limited to an issue with Firefox. However, as I’ve been concentrating on the obvious stuff (and a few things that went pear-shaped on the admin side) I’m not absolutely sure that the rest of the site is running as it should. So if you come across any weirdness, please let me know, ta.
On that note, an issue that’s been raised by a few people that use IE where on navigating to the site, it loads then the page goes blank. After a little scouting about in various forums, I found that this may be something to do with the version of Java Runtime Environment (jre) you’re running. Best to get an update directly from Sun and then try it again. If this doesn’t work, again, please let me know.

I am now going to buy some super glue and attempt to put back all the hair I’ve torn out over the last couple of days…

Hacked Off

Those who noticed would have seen that the site was unavailable most of yesterday. This was down to some bright spark who hacked the WP code from the source I downloaded it from. I’m not going into who and how and why as it’s all back up now. What I will say is that if you run WordPress you’re probably better off doing a manual install when the updates are released.
The site will be entering into maintenance mode again over the next couple of days whilst I filter out all the crap that was in the latest upgrade and reinstall it from scratch. It seems to be running okay at the moment but if you come across anything suspicious, any weird ads or anything untoward – drop me a line.

Movie List Updated

Added a whole new batch of flicks, but still working on the Asian stuff. Might take a while, so here’s the ‘make-do’ list for now.
It’s been upgraded a little, there’s now a link to give you a breakdown on the movie – however, this may be removed depending on how much it’s used. Far too much data hogging my precious web space…
God-damn! only 20meg but took about an hour to upload and then it just killed the site. Removed all the unnecessary and reverted to the old style… download your own pictures!!

Zone of Stink

So my week of recovery (read: being lazy, stinky and pyjama encased) is almost up. But on looking out of the window I might extend it a few more days. It’s been snowing on and off since Wednesday night now, not the kind of heavy snow that engulfs the place; more a ‘wet’ snow that looks totally cold and nasty and not the kind of weather you really want to go out in, even if it’s just nipping to the shops. Although I am at a stage where some groceries are required. Plus if I go out I could risk opening the windows to air the apartment out. Being a shut-in does wonders for room aroma..!

Major setbacks in the UK mean that my trip to Japan is on the back burner, I’ll be in touch with those who were planning to meet up with me shortly to explain what’s going on.

More updates to the site will be implemented over the weekend, so any bugs should be ironed out by Monday.

YesAsia Links

A few notes from various peeps have discovered an issue when clicking on the YesAsia link/banner in the sidebar (near the bottom of the page at the moment). If you encounter any issues, please let me know by commenting here… cheers.

edit: Ticket opened with Webgains – it’s probably a YesAsia issue, but all code is delivered via Webgains, they’ll sort it no doubt…

I belong to an affiliate program run through a company called Webgains. I don’t use it that much but every now and then I might see a flick from Japan, Hong Kong or Korea that I feel is worth blogging about and at that time I’ll plug it using a link to YesAsia.com to purchase the DVD.
This morning I was watching a pretty good film and I thought I’d blog about it – and I will in my next post, however, on logging on to my Webgains account I noticed an ad builder called iSense. This clever little bit of code goes to your website, sifts through the data and then decides on an appropriate company and product to advertise. I thought I’d give it a go and it came up with an ad for an online chemist selling pain killers…. go figure!!!!
